Those blisters around your mouth are actually caused by the herpes simplex virus. Usually it’s the simple strand (HSV-1). In much rarer cases it can be due to HSV-2 – from genital herpes. Either way, it’s highly contagious.
What causes a Cold Sore?
Getting them a few times a year? That means the virus is dormant in your body and flaring up during times of exhaustion and stress (and sometimes even sunlight exposure). If you have HSV-2, that means you’ve had oral sex with someone who has genital herpes.

What is Valaciclovir?
This antiviral drug is used to manage – not cure – herpes. It works by killing or stunting the growth of the virus and preventing it from returning so frequently in future. Which is useful when you don’t want to wear a cold sore to the office.
